A short history

Chester, then and now.

Chester began as the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix, founded in the AD 70s, and it has the most complete city walls in Britain. Inside them are the Rows, galleried medieval shopping streets found nowhere else in the world, and Chester Cathedral, which began life as a Benedictine abbey.

Chester Racecourse, on the Roodee, has staged racing since 1539 and is the oldest racecourse still in use. The Eastgate Clock was added to the city walls for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, and Chester Zoo, which opened in 1931, is now one of the most visited attractions in the country.

Cleaning in Chester

What keeps bins clean here.

Chester's city centre has a very high number of restaurants, cafés, bars and hotels in a small historic area. Bins often live in tight rear yards and passageways behind listed buildings, close to kitchens and back doors. Visitor numbers peak in summer and on race days, which is when bins are fullest and smell most.

Food hygiene and waste

Food hygiene law requires waste in food businesses to be stored so it does not attract pests or contaminate food. Inspectors look at bin areas as well as kitchens.

Race day surges

On race days and summer weekends, city centre venues fill bins far faster than normal. An extra clean after a busy period stops residue setting in.

Tight historic yards

Enclosed yards hold smells and stay damp. Regular washing and sanitising keeps shared yards pleasant for neighbours and staff.
