A short history
Ellesmere Port, then and now.
Ellesmere Port takes its name from the Ellesmere Canal, which reached the Mersey here in the 1790s. The town grew around the docks where canal boats met ships on the river, and the former docks are now home to the National Waterways Museum.
In the 20th century the town became an industrial centre, with the Stanlow refinery and the car plant that began production in 1962 and now builds electric vans. Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet opened in 1995 and draws visitors from across the North West and North Wales.
