A short history
Northwich, then and now.
Northwich has been a salt town since Roman times, when it was known as Condate. Salt mining and brine pumping caused so much subsidence that many town centre buildings were timber framed so they could be jacked up and moved. The story is told at the Lion Salt Works museum.
The Anderton Boat Lift, opened in 1875, raises boats between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal and was the first lift of its kind. In 1873 Brunner Mond was founded at Winnington, and in 1933 chemists working there discovered polyethylene.
