A short history

Runcorn, then and now.

Norton Priory was founded in Runcorn in 1115 and moved to Norton in 1134, and its remains are now a museum. Above the town, Halton Castle looks over the Mersey. Lewis Carroll was born in nearby Daresbury in 1832.

The Bridgewater Canal reached Runcorn in 1776 and turned it into a busy port. Runcorn was designated a new town in 1964, and estates were planned around a busway and a central shopping centre at Halton Lea. Sandymoor is one of its newest neighbourhoods.

Cleaning in Runcorn

What keeps bins clean here.

Runcorn's new town estates were planned with shared bin areas and communal spaces, many of them now managed by housing providers and agents. Newer developments at Sandymoor and Preston Brook have their own bin stores, and trade and logistics units sit along the canal and motorway links.

Fire risk in bin stores

Waste build up in the common parts of a residential building is a fire risk, and those areas fall under the building's fire risk assessment. Clean, tidy bin stores are easier to keep safe.

Shared bins, shared smell

When one communal bin is dirty, every resident notices. Washing all bins on the same visit avoids one bin spoiling the whole store.

Regular beats reactive

A fixed schedule costs less than repeated call outs after complaints, and gives agents something to point to when residents ask.
