A short history

Warrington, then and now.

Warrington grew at the lowest point where the Mersey could be bridged, and there was a Roman settlement at Wilderspool. In the 18th century the Warrington Academy made the town a centre of learning, and the scientist Joseph Priestley taught there.

The ornate Golden Gates in front of the Town Hall were made at Coalbrookdale and given to the town in 1895. Warrington was designated a new town in 1968 and grew quickly, helped by its position where the M6, M62 and M56 meet, between Liverpool and Manchester.

Cleaning in Warrington

What keeps bins clean here.

Warrington's economy is built on offices, science parks and distribution. Birchwood and Omega host large employers with staff canteens, and the town centre and Stockton Heath have a busy food and drink scene. New apartment blocks and estates have added a lot of communal bin stores in a short time.

More streams, more bins

Separate collections for general waste, dry recycling, glass and food mean more bins per site. Each one needs cleaning, and food waste bins most of all.

Canteens and kitchens

Offices with staff kitchens and canteens produce food waste every working day. Fortnightly cleaning is a common minimum, with weekly in summer.

Contamination costs

Dirty, smelly recycling bins get used for anything. Keeping them clean and clearly labelled helps reduce contaminated loads.
